TikTok has changed American culture forever. Although TikTok was created by a Chinese company and the app has been known to mine data on American consumers, people continue to spend hour after hour watching video after video on the platform as they try to stay up to date on the latest TikTok trends going around the globe.

However, one new TikTok trend could be very dangerous to your health. While there are many people who share delicious recipes for various dishes on TikTok, there’s a new recipe for chicken out there that doctors warn could be devastating to your overall health. The recipe, which is called “sleepy chicken,” includes an ingredient that you can buy at your neighborhood CVS Pharmacy – Nyquil.

The bizarre chicken recipe has gained so much traction in the United States of America that the Food and Drug Administration was forced to issue a statement warning the American public of the dangers of sleepy chicken for anyone who dares try to recreate the recipe that first appeared on the Chinese-created social media platform.

A recent statement from the FDA declared, “One social media trend relying on peer pressure is online video clips of people misusing nonprescription medications and encouraging viewers to do so too. These video challenges, which often target youths, can harm people – and even cause death.”

Although the Nyquil-infused chicken dish sounds disgusting to me, some people claim that it helps them sleep better at night while combating cold and flu-like symptoms. However, the FDA does not recommend anyone eat sleepy chicken because it might include too much of the cough medicine for a person’s own good.

“The challenge sounds silly and unappetizing — and it is. But it could also be very unsafe. Boiling a medication can make it much more concentrated and change its properties in other ways. Even if you don’t eat the chicken, inhaling the medication’s vapors while cooking could cause high levels of the drugs to enter your body. It could also hurt your lungs.”

So, if you see the recipe for sleepy chicken floating around on TikTok or any other social media platform, do yourself a favor and don’t try it. It’s not worth risking your health for a few minutes of internet fame.

In addition to the sleepy chicken TikTok trend, there is also another dangerous trend going around the Chinese-created social media app. The Benadryl Challenge encourages participants to take dangerous amounts of the allergy medication Benadryl and then try to resist sleep in order to suffer hallucinations that are induced by the drug.

This challenge is also extremely unsafe and has already led to at least one death. So, if you’re thinking about participating in any social media challenges that involve taking medication, just remember that it’s not worth risking your life for a few likes or views. Stay safe out there, everyone!
