When was the last time you ordered fast food from one of the biggest three national chains? If you’ve gotten a burger or fries recently from McDonald’s, Burger King, or Wendy’s, you’ve probably noticed one thing that all restaurants seem to have in common at the start of 2023 – prices are going sky high. Now, one user of the Chinese-created TikTok social media app revealed how his usual McDonald’s order suddenly jumped up in price until it cost nearly twenty bucks for him to get his fast food from the minimum wage workers in the restaurant.
The video was posted on TikTok by user TopherOlive who was ordering food at their favorite McDonald’s restaurant in Post Falls, Idaho. However, they were so shocked by the high price that they took out their phone and began recording the ordeal to show the world – and the Chinese government – how expensive things are getting in America.
“McDonald’s. So, I get there’s a labor shortage. I get there are wage increases and a number of other things. But, $16 for a burger, a large fry, and a drink. It’s just crazy,” said Topher.
The top comment pointed out that McDonald’s prices are creeping up toward a higher-class fast-food burger joint.
“Five Guys prices at McDonald’s?!?” the comment read.
A researcher from Rare US found that a Five Guys location in nearby Boise, Idaho offered up a double bacon cheeseburger with lettuce and tomatoes for $12.49. If you add a large fry and a large soda, the total comes out to $22.27, which is just about how much the McDonald’s meal costs – but with Five Guys, you know you’re feeding your body better quality meat and potatoes.
Inflation and price gouging are taking a bite out of everyone’s wallet in America these days. With prices reaching never before seen heights, it’s no question why the average American consumer is getting mired in credit card debt while struggling to pay for basic necessities like rent, electricity, and heat.
Many are taking to social media to express their frustrations, and while some may call it “first world problems” the reality is that a trip through the drive-thru can really put a damper on an already tight budget. Whether you’re grabbing food from McDonald’s or another fast food chain, you may want to think twice before ordering that double cheeseburger.
Not everyone is convinced, however, that McDonald’s prices are unaffordable. Many loyal customers will tell you that the low cost of their food allows them to enjoy a meal without breaking the bank. Sadly for TopherOlive, his experience may be reflective of a larger trend in fast food pricing, but it doesn’t mean McDonald’s can’t be an affordable option. With the right combination of menu items, you can still get a decent meal for a low price.
It seems that TopherOlive’s experience could be indicative of how much fast food is really costing in America – and whether or not it’s still affordable for the average person.
Only time will tell if prices continue to rise or if they level out as wages catch up with inflation rates. Until then, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on your budget and be mindful of where you’re spending your hard-earned money.
