Will Smith became the talk of the town back at the beginning of 2022 when he stormed onto the Oscar’s stage and slapped comedian Chris Rock after Rock made disparaging comments about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith. Now that it’s been six months since the infamous Oscar slap, Will Smith is planning his return to Hollywood, but not everyone is happy about his future plans.

According to a report from Deadline, Smith, 53, has plans to star in a directorial debut from filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s feature. The movie is entitled Brilliance and will be produced by Paramount Pictures. Although Smith has received a lot of negative publicity for slapping Chris Rock on national television, he continues to be a popular actor who the movie company thinks will still draw a crowd of fans.

The movie has been described as a “passion project” of Smith’s. In addition to starring in the movie, Smith also plans to help produce the film along with his longtime collaborator and friend, director Akiva Goldsman, who wrote the script for the Paramount feature film.

Although this role might be the comeback movie that Smith’s career is yearning for, sources close to the action claim that Smith “hasn’t committed” to starring in the film quite yet. However, he does appear to be very interested in the starring role and probably will do it.

Goldman wrote the script based on a novel by the same name by author Marcus Sakey. Sakey will also act as one of the film’s producers, helping bring the movie to life alongside Smith and other Hollywood elite.

The movie speculates that since 1980, about one percent of the population of Earth has been born with spectacular abilities that make them extraordinary and superhuman. People close to the making of the movie hope to see Smith starring as the film’s protagonist, federal agent Nick Cooper.

Cooper is one of the one percent of people known as a “brilliant.” He has been working with law enforcement agencies, including the Department of Analysis and Response, to track down terrorists who want to commit horrible atrocities against the American people.

In the film, Cooper must track down a fellow brilliant who is set on destroying life and society. Cooper “will have to violate everything he believes in―and betray his own kind,” according to the synopsis.

According to Amazon’s description of the book, “In Wyoming, a little girl reads people’s darkest secrets by the way they fold their arms. In New York, a man sensing patterns in the stock market racks up $300 billion. In Chicago, a woman can go invisible by being where no one is looking. They’re called “brilliants,” and since 1980, one percent of people have been born this way. Nick Cooper is among them; a federal agent, Cooper has gifts rendering him exceptional at hunting terrorists. His latest target may be the most dangerous man alive, a brilliant drenched in blood and intent on provoking civil war. But to catch him, Cooper will have to violate everything he believes in―and betray his own kind.”
